WARMER DAYS, WILDER ADVENTURES AT RHINO & LION NATURE RESERVE

ALLES magazine feature article

“The arrival of warmer weather is a reminder that
nature never stands still.”

For bird lovers, or anyone who has always wanted to give birdwatching a try, a visit to the reserve provides an opportunity to slow down and look beyond the larger animals. Keep an eye on the trees, water areas and open spaces as you make your way through the reserve. Part of the fun is seeing how many different species you can spot
along the way.

Of course, there are still plenty of bigger residents to look out for too. A self-drive gives families the freedom to explore the reserve in their own time, while a guided game drive adds the knowledge and stories of an experienced guide. The animals decide what each day will bring, which means there is always an element of surprise around the next corner.

After months of chilly mornings and winter layers, the first signs of warmer weather are always welcome. Spring is approaching, the days are becoming more inviting and nature is beginning to show signs of a new season. At Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve, it is a wonderful time to step out of the cold and see what is happening in the wild. What makes school holidays special is not necessarily the number of activities packed into a schedule. Often, it is the shared experiences that matter most. Watching wildlife together, hearing children excitedly point out animals, and spending uninterrupted time as a family are the moments that stay with us long after the holidays end.

There is plenty more to discover during a visit. The Wildlife Centre introduces guests to animals that act as ambassadors for their species, including animals that have been rescued, rejected, hand-reared or are undergoing rehabilitation. The Snake and Reptile Park offers another fascinating look at some of nature’s often misunderstood creatures.

Then there is WonderCave, which takes the adventure underground and introduces visitors to a completely different side of the natural world. Situated within the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site, the cave provides an experience that feels worlds apart from what you have just explored above ground.

The arrival of warmer weather is a reminder that nature never stands still. There are new sounds to hear, changes to notice and another season waiting to be explored.

So pack away those winter blues and come see what spring is bringing to Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve. Bring the family, bring your binoculars or bring the whole class. There is always something waiting to be discovered.

Spring also gives children a wonderful reason to become little explorers. Ask them to listen for different bird calls, look for signs of new plant growth or keep count of the different animals they see. Suddenly, the journey becomes its own adventure and everyone starts noticing things they might ordinarily drive straight past.

For schools, this makes the approaching season an excellent time to plan an excursion. Learners can experience nature for themselves, observe different species and ask questions as they explore. It is an opportunity to encourage curiosity and appreciation for the natural environment without making the day feel like another lesson
in the classroom.
